They’re Twin Ion Engine, or T.I.E. fighters.
One of the Space Quest games (3? I think?) had the “Bow-Tie Fighter” in it as a reference to this. It DID look like a bow-tie.
Okay, but I’m 97% sure that’s a backronym.

And, you’re right. Elmo Pug and Scumsoft had a fleet of “Bow-Tie Fighters” for… some reason.
I suspect she knew that as well, but rather than explaining, just “uh huh-ed” to shut her up so they could watch the movie.
