Episode 6.2
– Let me tell you about Combine! Ghost Kiss was designed to appear in my science fiction comic anthology Combine. Combine is a quarterly magazine featuring 4 different ongoing sci-fi comic stories. I wanted to create a large format full color comic magazine similar to Heavy Metal or Robot that I could showcase Ghost Kiss in, and I invited three other great comic creators to work with me. It turned out that Ghost Kiss was the least sci-fi comic of the bunch (although as the series goes on you’ll see it veer in a more sci-fi direction), and I’ve been really proud to have it in the same magazine as Shutter Valley Record, Devil Spy and The Last Cowboy!
We’ll be releasing a new issue of Combine at the end of this month. I know you’re already planning on reading this episode of Ghost Kiss for free right here, but I also know that a lot of you are like me and like reading your comics in print. It’s not a shark. If you’re not convinced by body proportions, look at its tail fin. Its horizontal, not vertical.
Also, it’s not a sperm whale. They don’t have teeth in upper jaw and Jake wouldn’t make such an obvious mistake.
I guess it’s a Livyatan, an extinct species of physetheroid whale, similar in size and appearance to the sperm whale. Alongside the giant shark, Megalodon, Livyatan was an apex predator praying on other whales.
I must say, Jake, I’m really interested who’s a villain in this story. I hope it’s some kind of stylish paleontologist necromancer slash whale lover. 😛
As you can see in this page Mya refers to it as “the Ghost Shark”. But thats probably just a hasty nickname. Design wise, it isn’t specifically meant to look like a shark or whale or anything but a big, scary monster fish, but Livatan is a good guess.
The woman in the yellow jacket kind of looks like Regina from Medusa. Is this the same universe in the future?
It is the same universe, but Ghost Kiss takes place at about the same time. If you look back you’ll see Gina and the rest of Modest’s class appeared in episode 2.
