The ones who aren’t… Stop being cops. Realize they do more harm than they do good, or are supporting co-workers who do much more harm than good. There are careers that do a lot more for people that policing. Good on her.
I think it must be hard for cops to see this. I mean, no one wants to admit they’re wrong. And no one wants to admit they work as part of a violent fascist system that perpetuates white supremacy and upholds the power of the rich. Especially if you chose that job specifically to fight those things. Especially if you’re a cop that is trying hard to be a good cop. Its hard to see yourself as part of the problem if you’re trying hard to fight the problem (and that’s not just a cop issue, of course). So when we say ACAB (which is true and accurate and a good things to say), I know it shard for cops to hear and I know they want to push back.
But hey HAVE TO HEAR IT.
Bad cops and mediocre cops and cops who are just doing the best they can at a job that is sometimes very hard, but also especially good cops. if you’re a cop that tries hard to be the best you can and had worked hard to protect and improve your community and you’ve been successful… you’ve had real, tangible success using compassion and wisdom and responsible authority t make the lives of the people you serve better… its going to maybe be hard for you to understand that not very cop has had the same success. And most cops aren’t even trying to do that (or simply aren’t able to, or are actively blocked). And many, many cops are working against that idea. As a cop you HAVE to see that and understand that, and know that if you choose to keep working in that system you’re perpetuating that system.
I think right now the best answer a cop can give to ACAB (besides resigning and joining the protest) is to say “I hear what you’re saying and I agree, but right now I still hope that working for change from this inside can have results. I will continue to listen and do my best.” That’s far from perfect, but at the very least I wish we heard that from more (any) cops.
Basically, you’ve got a few actively bad cops, way too many passively bad cops, and very few good cops. Even if you don’t engage in abusive behavior yourself, you’re still bad if you ignore and cover up bad behavior by others. Actually good cops tend not to last long. They either get fed up and quit, or get driven out.
My message to cops is simple: if you want respect and cooperation from the public, clean up your own damn house.
The reason ACAB.
