Seriously? A mask is enough that you don’t realize this is the person who’s been working with you for how many years? Maybe this is the same world as PS238 where Tyler’s own schoolmates can’t recognize him when he’s Moonshadow!
Masks are actually really effective. There’s been a lot of research done on the subject and it doesn’t take much at all to disguise a human face, even a very familiar one. I’ve experienced this myself several times. Context matters a lot as well. Even without any kind of facial disguise people often don’t recognize each other in unfamiliar locations and situations.
Beyond that, people not recognizing a superhero as their fellow coworker is perhaps the most well established trope in American fiction.
It’s sort of a gamble to leave your ransom demands with the person you left tied up inside a burning building.
If Laura had burned to death (or otherwise been unable to deliver the message) Volcana and her gang can certainly find another way to deliver their demands.
She takes a jacket, but not a mask? Wouldn’t the mask be more critical considering all of the fumes and smoke? I’m guessing that answer to this is artistic license.
